Sara D. Roosevelt boasts a lot of character and history on the Lower East Side.
A 7.8-acre park on the Lower East Side of New York City, this park is named after Sara D. Roosevelt, the mother of President Franklin Roosevelt. The park stretches along seven blocks and has a variety of activities for all ages. At Sara D. Roosevelt Park you will find basketball courts, turf soccer fields (we got to catch an intermural match that was quite exciting), multiple playgrounds that a great for all ages (including, baby swings, swings, monkey bars, multiple slides, climbing structures and more…) and they even have a concrete ping-pong table! There are a number of benches and picnic tables as well. We ended up bringing our picnic blanket and having some snacks at M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden (which is located in the middle of Sara D. Roosevelt Park). In addition, there are plenty of Citi Bikes to rent if you want to bike around the park. The sidewalks are wide and the park was not crowded when we went. You can easily bike a few laps around the park to see everything it has to offer.
This park has multiple entrances, we most enjoy the entrance across from Gatsby Hotel and Whole Foods. Across the street is Whole Food of Bowery. They have a great Allegro coffee shop inside with its own entrance. Major win – parents can grab a coffee and then head to the park with the kiddos.
