Yummy, locally sourced ice cream at Sarah's!

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream is a small, local chain with two locations in Bethesda—one on River Road in the Kenwood Station Shopping Center with Whole Foods and Georgetown Bagel and the other in Wildwood Shopping Center with Balducci's and Bethesda Bagel. The shop is headed by a local mother-daughter team, Sarah and Annie Park.

The shop churns out delicious, small-batch flavors made with local ingredients whenever possible in both classic and seasonal flavors, such as Chunky Cookies and Dough, Earl Grey & Speculoos, and Grapefruit Champagne Sorbet, the last of which was a special boozy flavor released just in time for Mother’s Day, along with a few others, like Burgundy Cherry, Bailey's Chocolate, and Dark & Stormy Rum Raisin. Over the winter holidays, they offer flavors such as Santa Gingerbread and Spiked Eggnog. They even offer a Pup Cup for your hot and hungry four-legged babies, made from pumpkin, greek yogurt, peanut butter and beef liver.

In addition to cones, Sarah's also offers pints to-go, milkshakes, ice cream flights, floats, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, cold brew, as well as custom-made ice cream cookies and pies.

During Covid-19, the shop is take-out only and there are no tables inside. However, the River Road location does offer some benches outside for al fresco ice cream. You can order ahead online and schedule a contact-less pick-up or walk-in and order.

Sarah's is walkable to the Willard Avenue Playground, which is just over half a mile south on River Road.

I live in Bethesda, MD with my husband, son and daughter. I grew up in the area and moved back a few years ago after spending almost 20 years away--mostly in NYC where I started my career in book publishing, obtained my MS in Library & Information Science, worked for a legal nonprofit, and had my son! I'm now a Research Librarian at an area university. I love exploring everything the area has to offer with my kids. Pre-Covid, we enjoyed taking the Metro downtown and going to museums, especially the dinosaur exhibit at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. These days, we spend a lot of time exploring all the nearby outdoor adventures--one of our favorite spots is Black Hills Regional Park!
