Short Sands Beach is perfect for playing on the beach, hiking, and surfing!

Short Sands. Shorties. Oswald West. This spot has a few names known by the locals, and honestly, all the other surfers might get mad at me for telling you all about this sweet little spot! Short Sands is a Pacific Northwest hidden gem because this remote little cove has so much to offer. From tons of trails to a beautiful sandy beach to its views, its beauty is unmatched!

Insider Tips

Short Sands is nestled in Oswald West State Park, between Manzanita and Cannon Beach on the 101 so the first thing you need to know is that the trailhead and parking lot is right on the 101. Once you find a parking spot it’s just over a mile hike to the beach!

Paradise is Just a Hike Away

You’ll know you’re getting close to the beach when you see the trees open up to a little bridge, and the sound of the crashing waves gets louder and louder. The trail spits you out at the most beautiful sight. Picture a little cove surrounded by cliffs and trees that just sets the stage for line after line after line of waves. After taking in the view, you can either stop off at the flush restrooms or walk down to the beach. There are makeshift stairs that lead you down to a rocky welcome but after 20 feet or so you are walking on soft sand. Keep this in mind if you are planning to bring a stroller or wagon! The beach is a decent size and because it’s a little local secret even on the busiest days it never feels crowded. You can easily find a spot to set up camp and then go off and explore!

There is much to do in so little time! You can check out the tide pool, the waterfall that falls right into the ocean, climb on all the rocks and fallen trees, play where the stream meets the ocean, swim, surf, or bodyboard!

Surf's Up!

This beach is where I learned to surf because it is so kind to swimmers. The white water, or the “soup,” is great for beginners. The waves have already crashed, so they can’t crash on you, and it is so shallow you can surf in the knee-deep water and let the soup take you to shore. Of course, only do what you are comfortable with. If you decide you want to surf, I highly suggest stopping at Cleanline in Cannon Beach on the way. They can set you up with a super warm wetsuit (you literally won’t even know you’re in frigid water), gloves and booties, a board, and a soft rack to drive your boards to the beach! They also offer surf lessons if you think you might need a little guidance.

While playing on the beach all day is my cup of tea I know it’s not everyone else's, and that is the great thing about Short Sands! There are so many hiking trails to keep you occupied! There are 14 hikes at Oswald West State Park, and seven of them are considered manageable, with most easy trails between 0.5-1.5 miles. The Short Sands is toddler-friendly. If you have older kids (ages 10-12+), I highly suggest the Cape Falcon Trail. It is a TREK, especially if it’s muddy. But if you have a kid who thrives on challenges or just loves a good view, then definitely check out this trail!

The Details

This spot is at least seven miles from the closest restaurant or gas station, so make sure you have a ton of snacks, water, and gas. There is potable water if you need to fill up your water bottle. There are bathrooms in the parking lot and at the beach. Parking can get a little crowded in the summer, so plan to get there early. There is additional parking on each side of the 101, but that’s probably not ideal unless you have older kids who can safely walk on the side of the highway.
