South Mountain Fairy Trail

hikes, outdoor-adventures

Take a magical walk through the woods where fairies have built their homes along the white-blazed path at South Moutain.

This easy half mile walk (moderate inclines and roots to trip over) will enchant fairy lovers of all ages. Starting at South Mountain Reservation's Locust Grove parking lot, look for the fairy trail sign to see where to start your journey. It’s generally crowded so other guests can help point you in the right direction if you don’t see it right away. All-terrain strollers can be used but I would recommend babywearing if you have a very little one.

The houses are built out of natural materials fairies find in their habitat, like stones, twigs, and moss. They are whimsical and magical with tiny furniture, swings, and ladders. It’s really fun to see the kids light up every time they spot a house then peer inside looking for fairies and magical trinkets.

Once you reach the water, it’s the end of the fairy trail. Most people play in/around the water for a bit then backtrack to the parking lot though you can continue on the trail further into South Mountain Reservation. Dogs on leashes are welcome on the trail.

The fairy trail has been very popular throughout the pandemic so plans are in the works for a significant restoration. Visitors should remember to leave no trace, respect the fragile structures, and stay on the path (all fairy homes are visible from the path).

The parking lot can fill up, especially on weekends. Parking is also available across the street. A few portable toilets are available in the parking lot.
