Summit Lake Trail is a stunning hike that leads to a beautiful lake in the Sierra Nevadas
This 4.7 mile round-trip hike is sure to wow you with its views of the mountains as well as Summit Lake at the halfway/turnaway point. Summit Lake trailhead is near Soda Springs, California, about 1 and 1/2 hours west of Reno. The trail is easy-to-follow, but make sure to read the trail markers along the way as there are other trail turnouts. The trail can be a bit rocky in a few spots so good hiking shoes or boots are helpful. There is plenty of shade along the way and some beautiful views that you will want to snap photos of so do not forget your phone or camera (a selfie-stick is helpful too!)
The elevation gain is very gradual making it easy on the knees and doable for younger kids, despite the longer length. This is also manageable for adults who may be carrying young ones in a hiking pack. The beginning of this hike is a bit noisy as the trail is close to the highway, but the noise fades away as you continue along the trail.
The lake provides the perfect spot for lunch with a view. There are large rocks around the lake that act as great tables and seats for your snack or picnic.
The parking lot is large, but can fill quickly as this is a popular spot, especially on the weekends. There was no cellphone service for the majority of the hike so make sure to plan accordingly. Restrooms are available at the trailhead parking lot, however there were no infant changing tables.
This trail can even be accessed during the cold months with proper snowshoes, warm attire, and warm gear.
Make it a day adventure and visit the nearby town of Truckee to enjoy some delicious food (Full Belly Deli is a great lunch spot), walk along the Truckee River, and play at Truckee River Regional Park.
