The Dune Climb

Dune Climb, South Dune Highway, Glen Arbor, MI, USA

hikes, local-highlights

Climbing the dunes feels like a rite of passage, and there’s a designated area about 5 miles north of Empire to do so.

Strong hikers can hike all the way to Lake Michigan, a strenuous, 3.5-mile trip that can take three to four hours. But little kids and families still love hiking up the dunes and turning around to run down the sloping hills once they’ve had their fill of hiking. There are restrooms and a picnic area at the bottom of the dune climb, so pack some lunches for when you’re finished. You must have a park pass to enter, but you can use your pass from the scenic drive at the dune climb.

This can be a very strenuous option if you choose to do the full trip that is 3.5 miles straight up to Lake Michigan, or you can take it easy and turn around when you want! Kids definitely prefer the shorter version that involves running and rolling down the dunes when they are finished! Bring a ton of water and sunscreen as this can be a very hot and dehydrating activity. The Dune Center where you park as a picnic area and restrooms as well as a bookstore. If you do not want to climb the dunes, you can explore the Sleeping Bear Heritage trail at the base of the dune on the north side.

Regardless of how ou decide to climb the dunes, it is a rite of passage and a must-do while you are visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park! Just make sure to go on a nice day that isn't too hot.

Lizzy grew up in the summers on a lake in beautiful Northern Michigan and she spent the winters making the most of the state's endless snow and slush. She lives by the motto "There's no such thing as bad weather" and you'll find her outside rain or shine. These days, Lizzy and the boys like to adventure around Nashville, looking for toddler-friendly hikes, parks and swimming holes.
