A unique experience for all ages awaits at The National Aviary!
The National Aviary in Pittsburgh is one of the best ways to see countless examples of local and exotic wildlife up close and personal. It’s the only independent indoor nonprofit zoo for birds in the United States. The habitats are truly immersive as you can step into each area and be immediately greeted by birds on the ground, in trees, in ponds, and flying around from perch to perch.
Each area includes placards identifying the birds you’ll see in a given area so you and your family can learn about the different species, about 150 in total, as you move throughout the exhibits. Opportunities to see penguins at feeding time or to visit with a two-toed sloth shouldn’t be missed. Checking their website will provide additional information about special events such as a condor talk and Kids’ Flamingo Yoga, so be sure to research your trip before heading out to make the most of your visit. Once you’re there, feel free to chat up any member of the friendly aviary staff you may see walking around. They are extremely knowledgeable and genuinely glad to talk about their passions for birds as well as conservation.
The facility is entirely wheelchair and stroller-friendly and the restrooms are clean and accommodating. Both street parking for free and a paid lot were available options. Visitors can eat at Atria’s Kookaburra Kitchen right on site. The menu includes soups, sandwiches and salads, including vegan and gluten-free options.
