The Union Transportation Trail is a nine-mile path that runs through various fields, areas, and offers beautiful scenery.
This is a great option for families who are looking to ride bikes together, go on a stroll, or for parents who want to take a jog with strollers. The Union Transportation Trail was once the Pemberton & Hightstown Railroad, established in 1864 to allow farms and dairies access to larger railroad hubs so they could more easily ship goods. After the freight rail service ended in 1977, Jersey Central Power and Light acquired the line and put up power lines along the length of the trail.
The trees have been trimmed to accommodate the power lines, so there isn't a ton of shade on these areas of the trail. Make sure you wear sunscreen and bring hats or a visor to wear under your bike helmet! The Union Transportation Trail has the potential to be a part of the Circuit Trails, a network of trails in the greater Philly area, which will be 800 miles of trail once completed.
This trail takes you over roads, streams, and through farmland, urban areas, and gently rolling hills. There are trees are fields throughout the trail, and you can overlook wetlands, watch waterfowl, and admire the scenery. The trail is not paved, but crushed gravel so you can still take certain strollers without any issues. You can also ride horses along this trail!
Consider bringing binoculars for the best wildlife viewing. There are various access points, so plan ahead for the best adventure for your family.
