Valley Stream is home to a fantastic state park with great nature trails and playground for kids. 

Located in North Valley Stream area, Valley Stream State Park has lots of outdoor activities for the whole family all year long. There are kid-friendly nature trails, a playground, ball fields, volleyball, basketball, picnic areas with grills, and horseshoe. One of the playgrounds features a large play structure with multiple slides, climbing structures, a bridge, steps and pretend play inspiration. The surface of the playground is poured-in rubber to give better access for those in wheelchairs or strollers. There is an area of swings for both big and little kids plus a four-seater swing.  Another playground has a smaller play structure with two slides, climbing, and pretend play. There are also some rock structures to climb and large shade umbrella plus a swing set. 

The nature trails for kids are called The Squirrel Nut and Hickory Nut trails which give children an opportunity to explore different habitats. Another popular trail is the Valley Stream Loop. This is an easy, paved 2.7 mile loop around Valley Stream pond and by the playground. This is great for a longer walk or run with the stroller or family bike ride. The park has a half-mile walking trail course with 15 exercise stations along the path. A variety of exercises for strength training and stretching will give you a test of your endurance. The outdoor equipment focuses on cardiovascular fitness, vitality, and longevity for all ages. During the winter, families can enjoy cross country ski trails. 

There are several picnic shelters with grills around the park. These can be rented out for gatherings.
