Wetzel Park is home to Liberty Hill’s only splash pad and it’s surrounded by grass and trees.

After much anticipation, Wetzel Park’s splash pad opened in the early summer of 2020 to help local kids find reprieve from the sweltering Texas sun. Open annually from April 1 to October 1, the splash pad is a little bit bigger than your typical basketball court and features water jets of various sizes and sprays.

As the only city-run, public water play spot, the fountain can get crowded. Luckily it’s surrounded by plenty of picnic tables that are mostly covered from the sun, so parents and caretakers don’t fry while the kids splash around. Big, leafy trees line the park’s perimeter, keeping it fairly shaded and a great place to lay out a picnic blanket and snacks.

Bathrooms, not just porta-potties, are also nearby. Sometimes the fountains aren’t running. If that’s the case when you arrive, simply touch the blue pole in the middle of the lot to turn the waterworks on. (If you’re worried about getting wet, don’t fear — it’s far enough from the spray so you’ll stay dry if that’s your goal.)

Parents of babies and toddlers should be careful as there’s no separation between where bigger and littler kids play and some of the more baby-friendly jets are very close to big water play zones.

Dogs are not allowed in the park unless they’re a service animal. Diapers must be changed from further than six feet from the water, and the city asks that if you’re sick, please stay home and stay out of the splash pad.

During the holiday season, the park hosts a small, but festive light show display for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Both Major's Burger Company and Mojo Coffee are nearby the park. Consider grabbing your cooked to order burgers and fries for a park picnic from Major’s or get a pick-me-up at Mojo’s after an afternoon of splashing and playing.
