Alberta Park and Playground

Alberta Park just celebrated its hundredth birthday in 2021. It is a beautiful, shady park in an older section of Portland with towering fir trees and a wide array of playground equipment.

The playgrounds are spread throughout one half of the park, but you can still get a good line of sight to see your kids, whatever they choose to play on. There are four slides, four baby swings, a tire swing, classic seesaws, and plenty of things for the kids to practice their climbing and balancing skills.

This park is great to visit year-round. In the summer, the tall trees provide shade. If you want to soak up the rays, there are grassy soccer and softball fields that are perfect for laying a blanket out on. The Douglas Firs protect from the rain a bit during the wetter months. There is also a large, covered basketball court. This covered area is a fun spot for kids to ride bikes and scooters when the rain is coming down.

Portland Parks and Recreation recently took an underutilized acre of the park and turned it into a “Nature Patch.” This area has a trail to stroll and enjoy a forest understory full of ferns and flowering plants. There are spots to sit and take in the peacefulness along the way. The path is constructed of small pea gravel, so most strollers should do fine. There are plenty of paved pathways around the other sections of the park.

Feel free to bring your furry friends along! Alberta Park has an off-leash dog area for them to frolic and play.

Hi there, I’m Alayna! I spent my childhood in rural Wisconsin but have moved around quite a bit since — Pennsylvania, Texas, Argentina, Washington, Oregon and now Virginia. Community and the outdoors are two things that, wherever I’ve lived, have always been important to me. I have a degree in Community, Environment, & Development from Penn State and previously worked in the non-profit sector. Currently, I’m lucky to be able to stay home with my two young daughters. Before kids, my husband and I enjoyed hiking, camping, backpacking, and travel. The latter two don’t happen quite as often anymore, but hiking and camping with the kids are two things we’re still really passionate about! I’m excited to get to share some of our favorite spots with you.
