Avila Valley Barn is a local family-owned farm with animals, offering U-pick and yummy treats.
Between Avila Beach and San Luis Obispo (not far off Highway 101) you will find the Avila Valley Barn where I used to work in the sweet shoppe and bakery in college. You can enjoy the farm with tractor rides, feed the farm animals (they sell produce on site), homemade baked goods and pies, U-pick fruit and pumpkins, gift shop, Christmas trees, and barbecue on the weekends. The farm activities vary by season, but the sweet shop, farm store, and animals are open all year 'round. Pony rides are offered May through November. The pumpkin patch is open September through November. The hay maze is open in October. Christmas trees are available Thanksgiving weekend through Christmas. In the sweet shop you will find fudge, espresso and coffee drinks, saltwater taffy, ice-cream and milkshakes. In the farm store you will find all sorts of gifts like kid's old-fashioned toys, local honey and jams, and fresh pressed apple cider from just a few miles away (seasonally). It's a true country store. They also sell produce on site that is a bit older to feed the animals. The pies and fruit crisps are made and baked fresh daily and there are also turnovers (hand pies), sweet bread loafs, cookies and more. You can even buy a frozen pie to take home and bake yourself so it's warm. The crown jewel of the pie flavors is the ollalieberry flavored one. This is a local specialty where ollalieberries are a fruit that is genetically about 2/3 blackberry and 1/3 raspberry. Come see this special family-owned farm that has been in operation since 1985.
