Bring together calm, fun and exercise in the heart of the city and jump on the Capital Crescent Trail from Baked & Wired in Georgetown.
One of my favorite runs starts and ends at Baked & Wired. Typically, we do a three-mile out and back route, but the trail has plenty of opportunities to extend or abbreviate your run depending on your personal needs and goals.
You'll start downhill heading to K Street under the Whitehurst Freeway to warm up your legs. Passing the lively Georgetown waterfront with an incredible view of the monuments in one direction and paddleboarders in the other, an immediate calm comes over me. As you make your way towards the Capital Crescent Trail, the landscape changes to a quarter-mile of no sidewalks where you'll need to do some creative navigating to safely reach the rest of your run. Once you hit the trail (closed off to cars), it's a quick escape that leaves you feeling like you're in the middle of the woods with the non-city quiet where you can hear nature and your thoughts. The trail is generally well-kept and highly frequented by other runners and bikers.
Depending on the time of day, it can be rather quiet. As an overly-cautious mom, I would be careful to run on this trail during higher traffic times and to avoid early mornings or sunset runs. At the end of your run, there are a number of activities to appeal to people of all ages, whether it be kiddos feeding the ducks, playing in the fountain, a sweet treat from Baked & Wired or just people watching. For a larger meal after your work-out, try Chaia Taco. It's just a five-minute walk from Baked & Wired and offers great vegetarian tacos.
Perfect Pre-Workout Fuel Or Post-Workout Snack For Runners
Baked & Wired – a favorite local kid-friendly eatery on Thomas Jefferson Street in the heart of Georgetown – has quickly become a DC staple, a neighborhood go-to, and a tourist attraction all-in-one. Its amazing treats offer a great incentive to motivate your kids to get outside and explore one of D.C.'s most fun and vibrant historic areas. All week long at various times of day, runners and bikers can be found meeting up before or after their workout, enjoying live music, delicious iced tea, scones, or cupcakes (and avoiding the massive lines forming at nearby Georgetown Cupcake). Beyond the tasty food and drink, the bakery offers a convenient meeting place for friends and families, where people can chill, enjoy life and relax. (Pros: Great iced tea and a clean bathroom. Cons: No changing table.)
