road-trips

The Crabbing Dock in Garibaldi is only a short walk away from the highway, a perfect little stop where you can see how crabs are caught.

The dock is located right off of the Oregon Coast Highway and on the way to Rockaway Beach if you are headed west. If you are headed back from the beach, and towards Tillamook, it is also a nice little rest stop to stretch your legs.

Depending on the weather, the walk can be icy and windy, so bundle up. It is a short, easy walk on the dock. I would not recommend bringing strollers as fishers are located across the pier, and there is limited space to walk.

There are about seven little areas where fishers camp out and catch crabs. It is a learning experience that allows them to show people where and how crabs are caught. There are multiple methods, so talking to the fishers and learning about them is fun. It is also exciting to see them bring a cage up with the live crabs.

They have a parking lot, and we had no trouble finding a spot right by the dock. Two porta-potties are also available if you need to make it a bathroom break.

If you don’t want to walk the dock, you can stand on the outer parts of the dock and watch birds. We saw hundreds of birds, if not more.

At the end of the dock is Garibaldi Historic US Coast Guard Boathouse. Unfortunately, it was closed when we arrived, with no signs of hours on the website.
