Hayes Park in Arlington, Virginia
Hayes Park is a cute, local park kids will love, with a small playground and lighted tennis and basketball courts. The playground has some simple equipment, including a tunnel, slide, spinner, and sandbox, and there's a planetary-themed splash pad for cooling off in the summer. The splash park is well shaded, but some of the playground equipment is not. This playground is especially well suited for younger children just based on the playground equipment and features, but all ages would have a great time! There are big kid swings available as well as a fun climbing feature.
There is plenty of space to roam and throw or kick balls and I love that the big kid swings are set apart so there is less risk of a toddler running getting in the way of a moving swing. Baby swings are closer to the playground and sprayground for visibility and despite 66 running down the hill on which the park sits, it is not too noisy because it's nestled up to a quiet residential neighborhood.
The sprayground is a fun feature that is great for hotter days. The sprayground is open from Memorial Day to Labor day and hours vary on holidays.
The playground is open from sunrise to sunset but the tennis courts and basketball courts are open later because they are lit.
The park has water fountains and restrooms. If you want to grab something to eat nearby, head to Silver Diner or, if you need coffee, stop by Northside Social to pick one up to go on the way. Tropical Smoothie Cafe is also closeby for delicious sandwiches and more, as well as nutritious and refreshing smoothies. There's also a Baskin Robbins at the end of Lincoln Street if you want ice cream. You could also grab a bite to eat and bring it with you to the picnic table area, or even have a playdate or party there.
