The Lake Shelby Picnic Area and playground are a hidden gem within Gulf State Park.
The picnic area offers picnic tables, charcoal grills, public restrooms, pavilions, a playground, and fresh water swimming. There are two trails available from this area, the Lakeview Trail will take you along the perimeter of Lake Shelby and the Lake Crossing Bridge will take you over Lake Shelby to the other side of the park. The Lake Crossing Bridge offers chances to see wildlife hidden in the marshy grass that lines the edges of the lake. Pets are allowed in the park. Be aware that alcohol is not allowed though.
The park offers a boat launch for those who would like to launch a kayak, or you can arrange to rent kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes from Ike’s Beach Service from the rental office on site. The highlight of the area is the playground though, there are multiple structures for kids to climb and swing from and there is even a separate area for smaller kids. Public restrooms are on site as well.
Pro Tip: Bring sunscreen and water, there isn’t much shade cover at the playground. Let the kids play on the playground for a bit, and then enjoy a picnic under the shade of a tree by the lake shore. End your time at Lake Shelby with a walk over the lake to view wildlife.
Gulf State Park is home to many types of wildlife including alligators, so always be aware.
