Ledding Library sits on the edge of downtown Milwaukie in North Clackamas County, between Scott Park, a small natural area, and the city hall.
It was recently rebuilt and reopened in 2020. Opened initially as a circulating library in 1889, it burned down soon after, then moved into the Perry Pharmacy before moving in 1934, this time to the city hall. In 1952, the Friends of the Milwaukie Library was formed.
The Ledding Library is named in remembrance of Florence Olson Ledding and Herman's husband. For she asked that the city keep her property and home as a free, public library "for the uses, objects, and purposes of the furtherance and advancement of education, learning, literature, and science, for the use of all people regardless of race, age, station in life, color, sex, or religious faith."
This particularly family-friendly library has a huge children's section separated from the rest of the library, with a spacious and cozy reading nook, computers to play games on, and an impressively huge selection of books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and Blu Rays. There is something for every kid (and every kid at heart). When entering the kids' section, there's a regular-sized door, as well as a small child-sized swing door for an extra fun entrance.
Ledding Library has many other opportunities for kids, including several book clubs for children aged 5-12 and for the one- to the five-year-old crowd, grab-and-go crafts on Tuesdays that go along with their virtual storytime.
There are plenty of spots to sit and work, read, or rest while looking out their expansive windows with views into the natural area below if you hang out there. It's an easy place to get carried away daydreaming or even just taking a moment for yourself.
While there, don't forget to browse their library of seeds. They encourage visitors to not only bring up to ten seeds home with them but also ask that they bring in their seeds to share, genuinely making this stop a unique community-centered atmosphere.
They also have a library of things accessible online for you to borrow anything from puzzles and toys to hedge clippers and other home and garden supplies, Cricut makers to kitchenwares, and everywhere in between.
The exact property is small Scott Park, a straight paved path with several stairs and sitting opportunities to view the ducks and geese that frequent the area.
If you visit in the summer, just a two-minute walk will take you to the Milwaukie's seasonal farmers market on Sunday mornings, where local vendors sell produce, goods, and so much more. Not a spot to miss!
