Luscher Farms in Lake Oswego is a beautiful community garden with a variety of public programs.
Luscher Farms is a garden run by the city of Lake Oswego, and is open to the public. Once a dairy farm, the city purchased the property in 1990 and turned it into a community garden, children's garden, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) program tun by 47th Avenue Farm. It is also home to the Rogerson Clematis Garden. There are over 800 species of clematis flower plants here!
The children's garden hosts field trips, classes, camps, and even birthday parties. You can sign up with the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation for the camps and classes for kids. But, for informal visits, the garden is open to the public from dawn to dusk every day. If you are looking for more garden involvement, you can adopt a plot at any age. The food grown here is donated to Meals on Wheels and Hunger Fighters locally in the Portland area.
There is an ADA-accessible porta-potty in the back dirt parking lot. There are several shady picnic tables for open use. Next to the picnic tables, there is a chicken coop. One of the fun events I completed with my three kids was a scarecrow scavenger hunt in the fall. It was free and self-guided and self-paced around the gardens. They were rewarded with organic lollipops in a box up at the farm building steps when they completed it. If you are interested in the CSA program, you can buy a half share, the whole share, or just try it out for a single half share pickup.
Our favorite thing to do after visiting Luscher Farms is to walk the Stafford Basin Trail (Rosemont Trail) from the parking lot toward Stafford Road and end at Hezalia Field which has a small playground with restrooms. We mainly go there for the short hike up the hill behind the sports field because it is the perfect distance for little legs and has beautiful forested views and pastoral views of the nearby farms. There is also an agility course directly behind the sports field. Or you can choose to walk up Atherton Drive from Rosemont Road to do the short Stevens Meadows hike or the longer and steeper Cooks Butte hike in Lake Oswego.
