Macomb Park has activities for kids of every age and interest.
This may be one of DC's smaller parks, but for parents looking for fun outdoor activities for their energetic kids, it has everything needed to play for a couple of hours, with two playgrounds. One is a completely enclosed space for smaller children; the other is an open play area designed for bigger kids, but good for all ages. The little kid area has a slide structure, bucket swings, a seesaw, merry-go-round (that gets really hot in the summer), and a couple of spinning seats. The larger, open playground features a tall slide, swings, some structures to climb on, and the “Kiddie Treadmill,” a flat, roller slide, which is basically a series of roller bars in a straight line punctuated by metal arches to hold onto.
Additionally, there’s a small splash park area that gets insanely crowded at busy times. If you want some free play, the park also has a basketball court and baseball field, as well as picnic tables making it a popular place for birthday parties on the weekend.
Bathrooms and Snacks Allow You to Stay for a Summer Day of Play
A recreation center with bathrooms is open during the week, but it’s closed on Saturdays and Sundays. While school is still in session, Macomb is very busy right after school as it is a short walk from the John Eaton Elementary School. Also, be warned, in the warmer months, the ice cream truck has Macomb Playground on his route after school hours in the spring and on afternoons in the summer. They only accept cash so planning ahead is key.
If you're looking for a meal nearby, 2 Amy's is a short walk from the playground, as is Jetties Macomb. A little over half a mile toward Cleveland Park is Coppi's Organic Restaurant.
The National Cathedral is across Wisconsin, with Bishop's Garden, Beauvoir Playground (only available when school is not in session), and Open City for a snack or bite to eat. For more in the neighborhood check out our Neighborhood Favorites: Cathedral Heights.
