Ox Hill Battlefield Park is a Civil War battlefield tucked right in the middle of Fairfax.
This small park is maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority and includes a walking path on the perimeter of the battlefield with interpretive signage explaining the events of the Civil War battle which took place here. This is the only Civil War battle to have been fought in Fairfax County. There are monuments to two Union Generals who lost their lives during the battle as well as benches spaced throughout the park. The center of the park is an open green space which we saw many people using as a quiet spot for an outdoor lunch, so plan to bring a picnic if you plan to visit around a mealtime.
The trail around the park is very short with small inclines. It was quite easy for our small children to walk themselves. While it was an easy walk, we thought this may be a more interesting visit for older kids who have some knowledge of Civil War history. The park is right near several shopping areas however and would be a great stop to stretch legs and get fresh air on a busy day of errands!
The park has two parking lots but unfortunately no restrooms. It is one minute away from Fairfax Towne Center where there are many stores and restaurants, so plan to stop before or after as any number of them would have bathrooms available. Moby Dick House of Kabob is also there with delicious Persian food like kabobs, rice and hummus! Their food is very accessible for children, so it's a great place to introduce a different culture and cuisine to your little ones.
