Peter Gilmore Playground has some unique features for a change of pace.
Gilmore Playground is one of our favorites in town. It’s a large park with so many different areas for all different uses and ages. It’s easy to spend the better part of a day here, as children of all different ages will find something to keep busy.
The playground has climbing structures appropriate for all ages. A low structure is perfect for crawlers, with a small tunnel and some manipulatives to encourage standing play. There’s a medium sized structure with a few slides, a small rock wall, ladders, stairs, and some rope climbing. The large structure is pretty unique, featuring a huge spider-web-like rope structure. It’s easily 15 feet tall, and has a tube slide running from the top. It provides a climbing challenge for kids that you don’t often find at a playground. Aside from the climbing structures, there are a few small rockers, a small rope-enclosed carousel, swings, and covered benches. This playground area is entirely fenced in.
Outside of the playground, there’s other spaces for different uses. There’s a basketball court/soccer field, and area with workout equipment. There’s some paved paths that can be used for scooting or tricycles. There are two covered areas, one with picnic tables and another with checkerboard tables. You can find a few other picnic tables placed around the park, and there are numerous trees that provide shade on sunny summer days.
There are a few things that would be helpful to note. First, parking is free but it is all on the street, which can sometimes be hard to find. We’ve had to park a block or two away on occasion and walk up the street. There’s no bathrooms nearby, but it’s common that the town stations a portapotty there in the warmer months. During school days, a nearby school uses the playground around lunchtime. We don’t find this to be a problem at all since the space is so large, but it certainly is more crowded when a class of 25 students shares it.
