Hop a ferry to Vashon Island, hike down to the beach, and explore a lighthouse!

Spending the day on Vashon Island is one of our favorite activities because it feels so special when you get to ride the ferry to this beautiful destination. From Tacoma, head to the Point Defiance Ferry Terminal. Check the ferry schedule on the WSDOT website to plan your departure and arrival. You can also check prices as they vary based on the number of passengers in each group and vehicle size. We pay less than $30 round trip. I do not recommend walking onto the ferry without a car, as the terminal is more than 20 minutes from town.

Drive about 20 minutes to Point Robinson Park. The lighthouse has been keeping boats safe since 1885 and is usually open for tours (closed during COVID). Check VRBO and the park website for more information about renting the Lighthouse Keepers Quarters and staying overnight.

A short walk down to the point leads to a beautiful sandy beach covered with driftwood. If you arrive early, you might see some harbor seals heading into the ocean. Benches and picnic tables provide a great spot to each lunch or snacks. On a clear day, this is one of my favorite views of Mt. Rainier. There are ten acres of trails and beaches to explore. Your kids will love watching all the boats float by as they play! Head into the town center to check out local shops and resturants and grab coffee and a bite to eat.

Erin Gallimore
Erin Gallimore is a PNW born and raised, outdoor-loving girl currently living in Tacoma, Washington with her husband Josh and toddler Graham. Being outdoors has always been a favorite activity for her, but has found the calling of the great outdoors louder since her son came onto the scene. Erin and her family can be seen wandering local parks, hiking national and state parks, and sitting at local restaurants all across Washington State trying to find the best gluten free pizza. Erin works full time in healthcare and enjoys adventuring on weekends and holidays. When not working or adventuring, you can find her supporting local foster care charities since she was a foster mom for 6 years. Her biggest love is to teach her son how to love the outdoors and to watch him grow and learn with every adventure. Graham is a good hiker, loves water and sand, and loves throwing rocks at both. She hopes to share the love of the beautiful Pacific Northwest with the Happyly family!
