This covered observation deck overlooks Terminal #2 runway at Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) airport.
There are plenty of benches on the deck to sit down and listen to the overhead speakers announcing the planes as they land and take off. I would recommend looking up the flight schedules to see when the most planes are taking off if that is your main goal. We usually see lots of air traffic on weekday mornings. If your little ones like construction, there is also a fair amount of construction to be seen from the deck. There are educational metal cards on the observation deck detailing differnet planes. Under the deck there is a large propeller to observe that was a donated gift to the airport. There is also a gravel area located underneath the deck in the shade where children can enjoy playing with the rocks.
There are two paved pretend runways with the two RDU terminals on the ground. Endless hours of fun to be had running on this pretend runway. Don’t forget to bring a toy plane for your child to play with. At the opposite end of the park from the observation deck there is a large sand box complete with a metal climbing tower. Your child can play in the sand and still hear and see the planes landing and taking off. The circular metal climbing tower located in the middle of the sand box could be a little challenging for toddler ages, but still fun to experiment. This area will be very sunny and warm, with little shade on this end of the park, so don't forget your sunscreen
With lots of grass to run around, this park is for sure a unique place to spend your morning. There are bathrooms as well and ample parking! Several umbrella shaded picnic tables to enjoy a meal or snack while watching the planes. Overall this is a very relaxing and enjoyable activity for all ages.
