At the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, you can browse large-scale paintings, installations, and special exhibits that will open your and your children’s eyes to the wide variety of art in the world!

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a great place to visit with children of all ages. The museum is very large, but going in with the intention to take your time and see what feels manageable, can help dispel any disappointment in not getting to everything. I’ve found the key to enjoying art with children is to take their lead, not rush and enjoy their perspectives. It can be so enjoyable to listen to kids talk about how art makes them feel and what they see in art (abstract art especially!).

SF MoMA is spread across seven floors with works from world-renowned artists along with experiential art that will delight children and adults alike. One of the exhibits titled "Contemporary Optics" featured a colorful prismatic hallway by Olafur Eliasson. We also enjoyed the "Sphere Packing: Bach" exhibit featuring a sphere with over 1,000 speakers which played various classical music in varying patterns with the listener in the center.

With more miniature art in classrooms in recent years, exposing children to the various outlets available for expression and enjoyment through art is essential. It’s also such a wonderful opportunity for multigenerational, diverse interactions that are lacking in most of our daily routines, as the many visitors that frequent museums and art galleries have great experiences and outlooks to add to the stories surrounding art.
