Homemade, farm fresh ice cream awaits at Tulmeadow Farm Store.

A short (just over a mile) hike from Flamig Farm through farm land and forest, Tulmeadow Farm offers over 50 flavors of home made ice cream, including a good selection of vegan ice cream! With over 16% butterfat, the ice cream is rich, creamy and delicious!

Tulmeadow began making their own ice cream in 1994 and since then have consistently been named among the Hartford area’s best ice cream shops. Enthusiasts love their unique flavor combinations, including Banana Peanut Butter Cup and the long-time favorite, Red Raspberry Chocolate Chip. I can attest that both the original and the vegan version of their most popular flavor are both excellent! Ice cream is available from mid-April through the end of October. Check their website for flavor updates.

Besides the ice cream stand, the farm store also offers to-go pints, spoons and ice cream sandwiches. In addition, the store also sells hormone-free, farm-raised beef from their farm; fresh produce grown on their farm; cows and nondairy milks and buttermilk; pork, chicken, and turkey; local honey; local maple syrup; fresh pastas, breads and dough; jams and jellies; beverages; and frozen pies. They also have a CSA share.

The farm sits on a 73-acre woodlot, which is maintained as a healthy forest. Farm managers consult with a forester to harvest timber every 10-15 years to cull older timber and clear the way for newer growth. Tulmeadow is working with the Simsbury Land Trust to acquire the development rights and protect the farm as protected woodland.

I live in Bethesda, MD with my husband, son and daughter. I grew up in the area and moved back a few years ago after spending almost 20 years away--mostly in NYC where I started my career in book publishing, obtained my MS in Library & Information Science, worked for a legal nonprofit, and had my son! I'm now a Research Librarian at an area university. I love exploring everything the area has to offer with my kids. Pre-Covid, we enjoyed taking the Metro downtown and going to museums, especially the dinosaur exhibit at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. These days, we spend a lot of time exploring all the nearby outdoor adventures--one of our favorite spots is Black Hills Regional Park!
