Wapato Access Greenway State Park is the perfect place for a family hike!
Located on Sauvie Island, Wapato Access Greenway State Park offers trails, picnic shelters, and river access. The park’s main features are a trail around Virginia Lake and river access via Hadley’s Landing. The trail is 2 miles long, perfect for a toddler hike. The trail is also very flat, so you and your family don’t have to worry about switchbacks and big elevation gains. The lake is beautiful and is home to so much wildlife. You can find tons of ducks, marsh wren, and pacific wren as you hike along the trail. Depending on the time of year, you can encounter snakes! The first time I went to Wapato Access Greenway State Park, every few steps we took, we could hear harmless snakes slithering away from the trail. We only say a few, and they stayed away from us, but it is something to be aware of if you are afraid of snakes.
There is a picnic shelter with long grass and many tables about a quarter-mile away from the parking lot. There is also a viewing platform close to Hadley's Landing. You can walk down to the dock, Hadley’s Landing, to look at the Williamette River. If you happen to be boating, there are extra life jackets at Hadley's Landing.
The details
There are no restrooms at Wapato Access Greenway State Park, so plan accordingly. There is a dirt parking lot at the start of the trail, but you may need to park on the street if it is full.
