Watertown Free Public Library provides a comfortable place for a morning outing.
This is a library that we have spent a lot of time at. The children’s room is a bright, sunny room with large windows throughout. One end is arranged with small tables and chairs, and a small play house. The shelves on this end are shorter, allowing easy view of small children over the shelves, and are filled with fiction picture books. Recommended and featured books stand on top of all these shelves, and we have discovered many favorites here!
There is a section of taller shelves filled with chapter books, series, audiobooks, and nonfiction books. On the other side of the librarian’s desk are tall shelves with books in foreign languages, dvds, and video games. There’s a large area with tables where children can work or read, and a room that’s used for programming.
The children’s room librarians are patient and so helpful. On the morning of our visit my first grader decided he needed help finding some books. The librarian knew which section to show him for the Math books he was looking for. When he asked about an author she was unfamiliar with, she looked in the computer catalog. She then shared the information she found, that we can find the series of that author’s books in a nearby library. My son also asked for another series that he loves, and when she discovered that all the books were checked out, she checked at the main desk for any books that were not checked in yet. We checked out a large number of books, and she was so patient with my preschooler who wanted to use the checkout scanner! She clearly explained to him what it was for and even let him give it a try.
They also have a teen room just across from the children’s room. There’s a small cafe as well as all the normal amenities that you can find at any library.
