West Lake Nature Preserve is a delightful place with trails through the wetland bog, floating boardwalks, lake views, and a playground.

Westlake Preserve is part of the Portage Bikeway Path that connects and includes the Eliason Nature Preserve, Bishops Bog, and South Westnedge Park. The preserve has over 110 acres of wetland bog. It is a beautiful place that harbors the rare North Pitcher Plant, Pink Lady Slippers and Orchids.

Playground: Upon entering the preserve there is a large paved parking lot. You will find an open grassy area with the playground, benches, picnic tables, a covered pavilion and restrooms. The playground has two slides, multiple climbers, spring riders, and swings. Mulch under the playground helps to soften the impact if a child trips or falls. Pack a lunch or snacks to enjoy as you sit at the picnic tables under the covered pavilion.

Trail: The main trail, which is a 2.5-mile loop, is wide and covered in woodchips. Along the wooded path, there are large fallen trees throughout the woods for children to balance and climb. Make sure to be on the lookout for a large teepee on the edge of the path, it’s a favorite spot for children to play and explore. The bog and wetlands trail area contain floating boardwalks. These boardwalks lead to several beautiful views of West Lake. Bring your boots during the wet seasons since the floating boardwalks can squirt water.  The trails can be muddy near the lower areas, a characteristic my children found delightful. Don't let a little water stop you from enjoying this gem. Definitely bring bug spray during wetter months because mosquitoes will be out.
