The Wyoming State Museum in downtown Cheyenne has plenty to offer kids including a scavenger hunt and children's play area.

You'll learn all about Wyoming from prehistoric to the present day!

The Wyoming State Museum, located in downtown Cheyenne, has plenty of street parking outside the front doors and a parking lot on the north side of the building. The museum is easy to find, as it's right across from the Capital building. Check-in at the front desk and they will explain all about the museum and scavenger hunt. There are bathrooms at the entrance as well as toward the back of the museum.

The Wyoming State Museum is small, but honestly, that is what makes it perfect for kids. There are plenty of hands-on exhibits and activities to keep kids occupied.

On the first floor, close to the museum entrance, is the kid's play area. It is camping themed so the lights cycle through dark and light. There are plenty of things to explore here for kids of all ages. Smaller kids will like the puppets and campfire. You can pretend to fish with a magnetic fishing rod or set up camp chairs around the fire. Older kids will enjoy the microscope and specimens, pelts, skulls, and fossils. All of which you can touch and explore.

The Earl Newell Folk Art Collection of carved miniatures has a scavenger hunt on the wall. You match large objects from the Wyoming prairie days, with their carved miniature.

If your kids love rocks, gems, and dinosaur bones they will love the room on the first floor highlighting some of Wyoming's best finds.

Upstairs the exhibits focus on the varied topography of Wyoming and its National Parks. There is an exhibit on wolves in Yellowstone that captivated the kids. They loved the video and then the interactive map.

There is a small gift shop with lots of cute Wyoming gear as well as hats and gloves if you find yourself now needing those. There is no food option in the museum.

Don't forget to get your "bison chip" at the end if you completed the daily scavenger hunt.
