The Best Family-Friendly Hikes In and Around Richmond, VA
Richmond, known affectionately as “The River City,” offers a trove of hikes. With options like historic landmarks and river views, RVA has a hike for everyone! Narrowing this list down to *just* five hikes was difficult for me, as I absolutely love so many of them, but here they are. Five of the very best hikes Richmond has to offer.
Belle Isle
334 Tredegar St., Richmond, VA, 23218
History, a suspension bridge, and access to the James River are only a few of the reasons why this is one of the most beloved places in all of Richmond. The entire loop is 1.8 miles and is both bike and all-terrain stroller-friendly. Don’t miss the opportunity to play on the rocks along the river. It's always a favorite for my children!
Forest Hill Park
4021 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA 23225
The paths of Forest Hill hold many memories for my family. This park offers family-friendly hikes that will grow with your family! Our preference is to park by the Historic Stone House and follow the paved loop all the way to the creek. Pack binoculars to check out the herons and other wildlife, like turtles and fish. This route is 2 miles, with a covered picnic pavilion along the way!
Maymont
1000 Westover Rd., Richmond, VA 23220
Many know Maymont for its famed Children’s Farm and expansive gardens, but with 100 acres, this park offers several family-friendly hikes that any nature lover will appreciate! Don’t forget to splash in the creek, climb the trees and cross the stepping stones in the Japanese Gardens.
Pocahontas State Park
10301 State Park Rd., Chesterfield, VA, 23832
As the largest state park in Virginia, Pocahontas makes it easy to find safe hikes for everyone. We particularly recommend Beaver Lake Trail, which features a water spill, bridge, creek, and floating dock.
University of Richmond
410 Westhampton Way, Richmond, VA, 23171
Who can resist a hike with gorgeous architecture as the backdrop?! With a lake, a Greek amphitheater, and paved paths, U of R is a popular recreational destination for walkers, runners, and families.
