The Barnes Arboretum at Saint Joseph’s University is the perfect escape into nature right within the busy city.
Pictures will never do The Barnes Arboretum justice; it is a must see in person. You will see all different varieties of trees, flowers, and plants. With majority of them labeled throughout the property, it is easy to make it fun for kids. You could have them guess what something is called, or how to pronounce it, describe the different colors of the flowers, the options are endless. There are trails for walking that surround the property, with a small quiet pond in the middle. My child’s top favorite activities are walking the stone stairs by the rose garden, following the dirt trails around the property, and seeing the birds and squirrels you will certainly encounter at some point during your visit. There is a small parking lot, but also street parking available. There are bike racks on property.
Something special about this Arboretum, is that the students at Saint Joseph’s University include it in their curriculum. You will find signs throughout the property explaining that the benches and chairs were made by the students for a course.
Please reference the website for the most current hours, as they change with the seasons. Starting April 2022 through October 2022 they are open Monday through Friday 8:30am-5:30pm, as well as Saturdays and Sundays 11am-4pm. It is closed when the Saint Joseph’s University is closed for holidays, which can be found on the website.
There are restrooms located on property, no changing station. There is also a cold beverage vending machine located by the restrooms.
Coming Spring 2023, the building located in the middle of the Arboretum, The Frances M. Maguire Art Museum will be opening. Please check the college website for updates.
