While visiting Champoeg State Park, take a trip through the forest, along a mostly flat, family-friendly paved trail perfect for walking, jogging, or biking.

This trail has various starting and stopping points, making it not only accessible, but allows you to customize your route depending on the length of trip you’d like.

Starting from the visitor center to the Butteville store and back, it is a six-mile round trip, from the Riverside day-use area to Butteville and back is eight miles round trip, and from the campground, (enter the trail near cabin three) to Butteville and back is a four-mile round trip.

I suggest starting at the Riverside day-use area, a historical site which signifies the vote for the first government in the Northwest in 1843. This area also was once home to the Hudson’s Bay granary, before it was destroyed by the great flood of 1861. This day-use area has several picnic areas, including four group picnic sites, restrooms, and an off-leash dog area nearby. Continuing down the trail you'll go approximately 1.2 miles either on the soft surfaced walking trail or the paved bike trail, before coming to Oak Grove day-use area where you can picnic in any of the six group picnic areas, boat or fish in the Willamette River from the dock, or play a game of disc golf. There is also a restroom available.

From there you’ll work your way towards the campground. Stop to climb and play at the nature playground or take the short out and back trail to visit the Kitty Newell gravesite, where historic pioneer Kitty Newell’s ashes were once spread.

Back onto the bike trail, it then continues two more miles (with one gradual uphill, then descending) before ending at Oregon's oldest continuously operated retail establishment, the Historic Butteville Store.

The Butteville Store is open seasonally from May through September, offering ice cream, cold drinks, and snacks. They also offer taco Tuesdays and monthly live music dinners. Find out more at their website or give them a call at (503)678-1605.

The trail is best used from spring through fall, but is open year round.

Dogs are allowed on-leash only.

Electric bikes are allowed on the four-mile bike trail from Riverside day-use area to the Butteville store, but electric unicycles and scooters are prohibited.

The only bathrooms along the trail are at the day-use areas, the campground, and the Butteville store.

Hi, I’m Emily. A stay at home mom to two young children. We love getting outside & I’m always looking for new ways to challenge ourselves to do so. Me being an avid hiker & camper before kids, it’s only felt natural to continue exploring (if but a little slower), with them in tow. Besides hiking & camping, I’m also passionate about traveling, stand up paddleboarding, working out, swimming, cooking, reading for pleasure, living a nontoxic lifestyle, needle felting, & following my heart.
