Start at The Stone House and hike through Forest Hill Park for a family-friendly adventure.
Forest Hill Park is home to several activities for families: a playground, tennis courts, green space and more. We recently hiked at this park, and found a new route that is incredibly family-friendly. To start this outing, park on the street, in the circle by the historic Stone House. From here, you will go through the grassy area, and pass the playground. The grassy area would be a great spot for a picnic, so pack a lunch before or after your hike to enjoy!
After passing the playground, turn left, with the tennis courts on your left. You will then follow the ramp all the way down. If you don't have a stroller, you could utilize the staircase to your right. Once you've walked the entire way down the ramp, you will be at the beautiful lake. We've seen herons, turtles, geese and more here, so be on the lookout for wildlife.
Turn right and follow the path along the lake. There is a gazebo, if your crew needs a break. Follow the path, crossing the first bridge on your left. You will still continue around the lake. Eventually, you will be able to cross another bridge on your left, and walk back up the way you came. Or, you could keep walking, like my family did, past the bridge. Then, you will find several streams and areas to play, splash and enjoy nature. I recommend packing water shoes if you plan to let your children play in the water here.
There are picnic tables in the gazebo and in the large, covered pavilion you will pass by the lake. There is a Little Free Library in front of the playground, so pack books to donate if you have some. We walked about 2 miles and spent about 3 hours enjoying this adventure. If your family is up for it, I recommend heading over to Westover Hills Elementary playground, about five minutes away, for more outdoor fun.
