Getaway House: A Perfectly Named Escape Destination in Suches.

We truly loved our visit to Getaway House in Suches. It is a two-hour drive from Atlanta and also easily accessible from cities like Knoxville, Chattanooga, Huntsville and Greenville. Our friends met us from Nashville but at about four hours by car, it may be preferable to come for more than two nights. We truly would have loved to stay longer too.

Normally, we love to explore everything when visiting a new area, but in all honesty, we had to tear ourselves away from Getaway House: Suches, adjacent to the beautiful Chattahoochee National Forest! The cabin rental was so special that we felt compelled to bask in the experience, leading to even more quality time together.

I found the Getaway House’s inspirational guide to be a helpful bonus. It covered so much, including ideas for yoga and meditation. It’s so helpful when you seek activity, but you also just might feel like wandering the 57-acre grounds. We encourage visitors to check out one of the easy hikes available on AllTrails, as we did. As an alternative, take a short drive to hop on the nearby Appalachian Trail or any number of other featured destinations with beautiful mountain views.

For a local excursion, we took a mining tour about forty-five minutes away. The opportunity to see twenty stories down proved impressive, and we enjoyed learning the interesting history of the mining town. The area was very pretty, but perhaps the experience may better serve an older age demographic (our crew was three, four and five years old). The tours were also a bit expensive.

Considering the length of our two-night visit we may have instead benefitted from more time spent relaxing at the Getaway House kicking back around the included fire pit at our "tiny cabin," which we adored. The food options within a short drive were limited, but that is to be expected when your goal is “to get away.”

We felt lucky to find Cooper’s Creek Store for delicious, fresh-baked breakfast biscuits with the choice of eggs, sausage, bacon, and ham. They also feature lunch sandwiches and soups to go (available until 5 or 6 pm depending on the day). Considering it is located in an old country store with limited seating, they offer a surprisingly large selection of food, drinks, and snacks. The food was definitely all prepared from scratch and delicious, and the absolute best part was the warm, inviting nature of the gracious hosts.

For additional meals, we recommend grocery shopping before you go or stopping at one of the many Ingles Markets along the way. You can go with basic grilling options like hot dogs and hamburgers, or splurge for steaks. Light a fire and cook them over the provided fire pit grilling grate at your cabin in the woods! Adding Rice A Roni will take you right back to the camping days of your youth.

For breakfast, keep it simple with eggs, make a quiche before you go or purchase the oatmeal in stock at the house. For lunchtime, we brought rolls and cold cuts. This option proved simple after a hike and would have worked equally well as a picnic along the way. In our case, we were happy to wait for lunch because we looked forward to using the picnic table and chairs that each cabin offers.

Honestly, if we didn’t have kids with us, we could have happily lived with the food available for purchase in the cabin, unless you’d like to also have wine on hand. The kitchen was perfectly stocked with pasta and sauce, oatmeal and snacks galore (Swedish Fish, Tate’s Cookies, Beef Jerky) and more. Bring drinking water, juice and adult beverages if you are interested, as there is nowhere less than forty-five minutes away to refresh your goods.

Other than specific food preferences, beverages and your suitcase (pack light), they provide everything, including fresh linens and pillows. To inspire light packing, here is our list for kiddos: leggings, t-shirt or dress, pajamas, fleece, rain jacket, and a puffy jacket if it is below sixty degrees. Uggs, duck boots or rain boots and sneakers.  There’s no mirror in the cabin (which I loved!!) and all we considered when dressing was comfort.

Also, the cabins are dog-friendly!

Final Tip: On your way out, stop at one of the Waffle House locations for a simple breakfast to break up the drive and reminisce a bit before you get back into the action of life.
