Great hiking awaits at High Mountain Park Preserve!
High Mountain Park Preserve has great hiking trails, ranging in length and difficulty levels, so there will be a great hike for any family to enjoy all together. There are a total of 12 miles of trails, all with great views. On clear days, you can even see the New York City skyline, or you can catch a great sunset over the valley and reservoir. There are 5 trails to choose from, and an in-depth trail map is available online through Webmaps or at the kiosk. The best view of New York City begins at the trailhead in William Paterson University on the 2.25 mile Woodland Trail. This transitions into the Summit Trail, the 2.5-mile path which has yellow markings. For the most part, the markings of all of the trails are easy to follow, and they have been updated recently. A lot of the trails combine a few of the different colored paths, so your crew can customize your hike depending on how long you want to be walking. Most of the longer trails are of moderate difficulty. We recommend the 5.7 mile Lookout Point and Waterfall Loop, 3.7-mile Summit loop, and the 4.3 mile Mount Cecchino and High Mountain Loop. They are all great ones for a longer active family activity, especially for school-aged kids and older.
This park is mostly hiking trails, but it does connect to the Franklin Lake Nature Preserve through the ADA hiking trail. So, you can enjoy all of the amenities in that park, such as sports courts, boating and picnicking following your hike.
