Bouldering, hiking, river views and wildlife await at the John. J Radcliffe Conservation Area!
John J. Radcliffe Conservation Area offers so much for outdoor fun! We usually spend about two hours when we visit. We start at the parking lot, which is easy to find, head to the right and follow the 1.5-mile trail. We love stopping to play in the Appomattox River, which goes along the trail. There is not a beachy area for you to drop your things off. Rather, we climb the boulders and catch glimpses of the dam. The best places for bouldering are the first two small paths you take off the main path.
Needless to say, although the water is quite shallow near the trails, children need to be good listeners and hold hands when necessary. And, as always when water is involved, it's important to pack a change of clothes! Our children always seem to get their shoes and socks soaked while playing on the boulders, so packing dry footwear is a must.
Following the trail will lead to a few bridges and a boardwalk. One crosses through a marsh, where you can see and hear lots of critters. We typically see osprey, lizards, and various insects on this easy walk.
We have never seen this park crowded. Mostly, we see fishermen, dogs on walks and families walking or biking. All the trails permit bikes. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom. If needed, there's a gas station about a mile away from the park. Picnic tables can be found by the parking lot when you arrive, so pack snacks and/or lunch.
The views of the Appomattox River are beautiful. In fact, you will see photographers snapping photos of birds and birdwatchers bringing along their binoculars.
