Hike the Lake Apopka Trail Loop, a rugged mile around Lake Apopka.
There are several areas where you can start the hike, but the most recommended would be at Magnolia Park. Here you will find a parking lot on arrival, along with facilities to begin and end your journey.
The loop itself is not a true loop as you cannot make your way all the way around the lake, but there are certain marker points that are recommended if you wish to stop and return. Beginning at Magnolia Park, you can take a four-mile trek one way to Historic Pump House, or go 17.2 miles all the way to Green Mountain Trailhead.
The full hike is several grueling miles, with only one way back. Prepare ahead if coming and keep in mind it should not be done with little ones; stick to the path and do not attempt the loop if you have kids in tow. The best way for the faint of heart to see the markes is to follow the map and take the loops a little ways out for views along the lake and for wildlife spotting, until you get tired and then return back. Start early so you do get exposed to the heat of the day, and come prepared with plenty of sunscreen, snacks and water! And be aware of weather - there are not shelters so make plans to turn back if a Florida thunderstorm appears to be rolling in.
Upon return, enjoy Magnolia Park and let your little ones run out some of that energy. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it in the park; there is a Publix grocery store about 2.5 miles down the road!
