Literacy for littles: Explore the expansive children's section at Laprade Library!
Laprade Library, a branch of the Chesterfield County Library, is one of the best local libraries for families. It has a vast children's section, complete with several tables, crafts-to-go, already prepared learning activities, outdoor story times (weather permitting), and an organization system that makes it easy for the littlest bibliophiles to find their next read!
When you enter the library, the children's section is the first area to the left. There are a couple computers, which are helpful for older children, like my eight year old daughter who enjoys using the CCPL Kid's Catalog to select her books. There are also several tables, many have coloring pages and crayons. Other tables have simple, early literacy games, like rhyme-matching games, and upper/lowercase letter matching games. I love these, because my children can play them quietly. Also, these games are nice because they can play alone or with a grownup.
When weather permits, the library offers outdoor storytime, which is always interactive. Pack a blanket for these, and be sure to register in advance. The storytimes fill up fast. You can register for any CCPL activity two weeks before the event date using the CCPL event calendar. In addition to storytimes, Laprade Library often hosts Early Literacy Story Walks. We always enjoy the Fairy Trail, and the story walks that involve interactive components like scavenger hunts!
The restrooms are directly inside the building, as soon as you enter. Parking is simple as it is directly in front of the library. If you plan to check out books, have your library card ready. If you do not already have a library card, complete the online library card application prior to visiting. Patrons with a library card may check out up to 30 items.
After visiting the library, we head to Rockwood Park, about five minutes away. Rockwood Park has a nature center, paved trails, large playground, soccer and baseball fields.
