Legion Park is a unique park in Woodburn offering a historical and exciting dinosaur theme, fitness equipment, and a short paved trail.
Parking in the large parking lot off of Park Ave, you barely get a glimpse of the imitation dinosaur bones at the nearby playground. First from the parking lot you'll see a large soccer field, fully equipped with stadium seating at the nearby covered bleachers. Then walking the paved path you'll pass by a large covered picnic pavilion, with many picnic tables and seasonal restrooms, creating a great space to host an event or party.
Continue walking the path and it will take you past some grassy play areas and eventually to the playground, which is simple in some ways, yet incredibly unique. With a large dinosaur skeleton that you can climb on and through, this park was a huge hit with my five year old! There's also a sandbox nearby that has an imitation mastodon fossil, in and under the sand, replicating what was found in the area some thousand years ago. With many archaeological discoveries found here over the years, this nature playground pays homage to this unique and historical landscape.
A single standing slide, an artificial log to climb through, and a swing set with four swings round out this playground. Surrounding the area are several interpretive signs giving information regarding extinct animal fossils found in the Willamette Valley. There are also a few wooden benches to sit on and several more picnic tables in close proximity as well.
Near the playground is one part of the exercise equipment in the area. As you continue on the path, it loops around a dense douglas fir grove and you’ll find several other fitness stops offering different equipment at each stop. The path eventually takes you back past the covered pavilion and back to the parking lot.
There is a section of the trail along the back side of the park that opens up and goes downhill to what looks like a seasonal creek. Be aware of this area as the sides down are fairly steep. The path is perfect for jogging or walking with a stroller and there is plenty of shade to enjoy this park on a sunny day.
If visiting in March or April check out the nearby Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival.
Also, signs were posted in the parking lot asking visitors to park and enter the park at the neighborhood entrance on Queen City Blvd, where there is street parking. From the information given it looks as if they are updating the soccer field and stadium and that it should be completed by August 2022.
