Milwaukie Bay Riverfront Park is a small scenic space along the Willamette riverfront near downtown Milwaukie.
A paved path takes you from the streets of Milwaukie to an open green space with a few picnic tables just along McLoughlin/99E, making this an easy spot to stop and stretch your legs. Since it is right off a main road, it’s not the most secluded or peaceful park, because of the amount of noise pollution, but it’s been perfect for my family at times when we just need to get out for a quick walk or want to toss rocks into the river.
There are stone steps that lead down to the rocky beach, but the amount of beach available is dependent on current water levels. The water isn’t fast here, but watch for quick drop offs within the water. Life vests are recommended if your kids play in the water. Keep a watchful eye on younger children. Because this is a spot where people sometimes come to fish, keep your eyes open for discarded fishing lines and hooks and broken glass.
This is also the site of the Jefferson Street boat ramp, with parking available for cars and vehicles with boat trailers and a bathroom before you go down to the boat ramp. There’s also an area there where it seems people have left life jackets behind for others to use, although I couldn’t find any official information on this.
Dogs are allowed on leash.
Although this park has been in progress for several years, in 2022, upon approval of various permits and agreements, construction will begin on many new features, including a nature playground, a picnic terrace, redwood tree preservation, extensive pathways, and more. I believe these updates will be a welcome addition to the community of Milwaukie.
