Recreation meets nature on the Split Rock Hike to a huge boulder in Pocahontas State Park!

As the largest state park in Virginia, Pocahontas State Park offers so much for visitors. There are many options for trails, activities and programs!  We recently tried the Forest Exploration Trail, not a new trail to us, but we took it a different way and had a great time discovering this huge boulder called "Split Rock" at the end of our hike.

When you arrive at the park you will pay the $7 parking fee. If you plan to visit the VA State Parks several times during the year, consider purchasing the Annual Pass to save. After paying for parking, head down to the boat ramp parking lot. This is a large lot, so no worries about finding a space. From the boat ramp, you will walk over the bridge and go left.  Stay straight until you get to the "Fendley Station" sign.  Follow that path, and cross over a boardwalk to the boulder.

This is an ideal hike for a hot day, as the tree canopy shades the entire path, and the creeks are perfect for cooling down. You will see a few small waterfalls along the way too! If planning on doing some creek play, pack dry clothes, water shoes, and a towel.

This route took us about two miles and we spent about two hours at the park. If you would like to add to your adventure, head to the Nature Center. You can access it by driving or walking to it. There are turtles, fish, and knowledgeable rangers at the center to answer questions and suggest which trails are best for wildlife sightings.
