Park Variety: Accessible Playground, Hiking Trails, and Creek Play

Poor Farm Park is such a fun place to explore! Because of the variety at the park, you could easily spend 3-4 hours exploring and taking advantage of all the park has to offer. Parking is convenient, directly by the playground. There is also a portapotty in this space, as well.

There are two playgrounds: a tot lot and a large, accessible playground so that all children can play together. The surface is a rubber turf, and there are tunnels, slides, climbing ladders. There are covered benches around the playground. Alternatively, there is a large covered picnic pavilion beside the playground. The playground area is in direct sun, so be sure to pack sunscreen. The day we visited, there was only one other family using the playground!

After a quick snack break, we followed the gravel trails down to the creek for some water play. The trails would be okay for an all-terrain stroller, but they're quite bumpy with lots of roots, so other strollers would be quite difficult. These trails are used for cyclists, too, so if you are into biking, bring your bikes along!

The creek is less than a half-mile down the trail. There is a perfect, sandy beach area where we set up "camp." The kids loved splashing and wading in the water. The creek is entirely clean, with no trash or broken glass. I was comfortable with my children being barefoot, but packing water shoes works, too! Packing sand toys adds to the adventure as the kids love to dump, pour, fill and entertain themselves this way for hours! A small amphitheater is past the creek, ideal for young actors to create their own little plays.

This adventure took us about 2.5 hours. In addition to the above-mentioned items, pack speakers for the amphitheater, band-aids - the roots are a major trip hazard-and bug spray because where there are creeks, there are bugs!

After our time at the park, we headed to Hanover Vegetable Farm, about 5 minutes away. We love to visit the goats, have a picnic lunch, and browse the locally made products in the market!
