The Air and Space Museum is a National Treasure.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is a national treasure for young and old alike. The mix of hands-on simulation experiences to the grandeur of seeing incredible airplanes, rockets and spaceships serve up a memorable experience. I've heard it's one of the most popular museums in the world, and that was even before the current renovation kicked off. Undergoing a complete transformation, half of the museum is now reopened with eight new galleries, with the second half of the museum still in the renovation phase (to be reopened 2025).
Currently, free-timed entry passes are required. Passes are released in six-week blocks and you can reserve up to six. The museum also releases a limited amount of same-day passes at 8:30 each morning.
The halls that are open has all models of planes (which you can actually walk into!), take you through the Wright Brothers life and journey with flight, see the different commercial airline uniforms and how they've transformed over the years, learn about the missions to the moon and so much more!
There isn't a shortage of things to explore at the museum, even with the limited reopening. Exhibits on view include the Wright Brothers and Exploring the Planets. The IMAX theatre is still temporarily closed, but you can visit the one at the museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy branch in Chantilly. (That alone is worth the trip, but I also love that location so much so don't miss an opportunity to visit.)
Reserve parking here or check out their parking map. Federal Center SW is the nearest metro station. There is a cafe in the museum with sandwiches, but you are not allowed to bring in your own food. If you prefer to eat somewhere nearby, try Ella's Wood Fired Pizza, its about a 15-minute walk but it's well worth it!
I have visited this museum many times. She’s been several times and is so observant and interested at this age vs the earlier toddler stage where we spent most of the time looking at the large hanging airplanes (which was also very cool) and I loved talking to her about all the things we saw and did. They have a great live Storytime for kids on Thursdays, and all ages can also explore online exhibits and virtual Planetarium Shows on the museum website.
I love exploring the National Mall and the proximity to all of the museums and monuments. It’s fun for a short rainy day outing or can be made into a longer excursion. We are so lucky to have the Smithsonian Museums available at no cost (although donations are accepted and welcome).
