Tumalo State Park campground is a clean and quiet, year-round campground just 4 miles from Bend.
If you’re wanting to escape the city, but still have the luxury of being nearby, Tumalo State Park campground is exactly that, being that it’s only a 15-minute drive outside of Bend. This means that although we enjoyed our time in nature, we were also able to enjoy eating out in the town, picking up forgotten condiments, and actually having phone service.
This campground is exceptionally clean! You’ll see several camp hosts who obviously care about the park, sweeping the dried pine needles, vacuuming the yurts, or selling firewood. The restrooms were clean and well-stocked, with the women's facility having a fold-out changing station. There is running (warm) water at the sinks and the heaters are on making it a comfortable space. There are even showers (we did not use them during our visit), but they lock up at 7:30 pm.
Just outside the bathrooms are washing sinks and trash cans so that you can easily clean your camping dishes and throw any food waste away, so as to not attract animals. Water at the individual sites was turned off for the season due to freezing temperatures while we were there (so we had to pack in our own water jug), but will turn back on as the weather warms up.
The campground has 23 full hookup spots, 54 tent sites, 7 yurts, 2 group camp areas, and seasonal hiker/biker sites. Although this campground is available year-round, loop A and the group camp are seasonal and will be open this year on April 29th. You can reserve a spot online at this site. There are also 4 campsites and 1 yurt that is available for campers with disabilities. There isn't a lot of privacy between sites and although our yurt was near the road coming in, it still wasn’t very loud at night.
A playground is located near sites 49 and 51, featuring a couple of different slides, a ladder, and a unique spinning game that gives information about different types of trees. There's a paved trail right in this location as well that leads over to the hiker/biker sites.
There is a day-use fee for the State Park as well as the Day Use area, which is just across the road. The Day Use area offers river access, picnic tables, and hiking trails.
