Tumalo State Park Day Use area is a pleasant spot along the Deschutes River and has a large, open lawn space, plenty of picnic tables, hiking trails, and river access.

Sit and picnic among the large ponderosa pines, junipers, and alders, or wade along the banks of the Deschutes River where the water runs slowly. A few small rocky beaches offer a perfect place for kids to wade and splash. This area along the river can be popular for fishing, more so further upstream, but still, keep an eye out for fishing hooks and lines. I did not see any while visiting, but it’s always good to be aware. Also remember to always keep safety in mind while playing in the river, especially with kids. Although the river does run slowly through here, it is always best to keep an eye out and remember that nature can be unpredictable.

The green grass is widespread and offers plenty of room to spread out. There are two group picnic areas open seasonally, which are both first-come, first-serve unless already reserved online. To reserve go to this site. Several grills are available for use and there are seasonal drinking fountains as well.

The flush toilets there are closed during winter so porta-potties are available on site.

Wander around, check out the section of paved trail, or perhaps if you’re looking for a longer stroll check out the 2.4 mile Tumalo segment of the popular Deschutes River Trail which starts from the day-use parking lot and leads to Riley Ranch Nature Preserve, which offers even more trails. Although narrow in spots, this trail is fairly flat and could easily accommodate an all-terrain stroller.

If looking for a longer visit, the Tumalo State Park Campground is right across the road and is open year-round.

Hi, I’m Emily. A stay at home mom to two young children. We love getting outside & I’m always looking for new ways to challenge ourselves to do so. Me being an avid hiker & camper before kids, it’s only felt natural to continue exploring (if but a little slower), with them in tow. Besides hiking & camping, I’m also passionate about traveling, stand up paddleboarding, working out, swimming, cooking, reading for pleasure, living a nontoxic lifestyle, needle felting, & following my heart.
