Literacy Fun: Take in the extensive children's section with toys, puzzles, and of course, BOOKS!
The Williamsburg Regional Library is a fantastic place for families to visit! Our family loves this library when we need an indoor activity after exploring Colonial Williamsburg, as it is within walking distance from the historic sites. We have visited the library on hot days to cool down and on cold days to warm up. We are always in awe of the many offerings at this public venue.
Parking at the library is convenient, as there is a large parking lot. Alternatively, street parking is available. In front of the library is City Square Park, complete with picnic tables, artwork, and a fountain. This is a great place for a family picnic, or to let your little ones get their wiggles out before entering the library.
Once you enter the library, there is a circulation desk and a vast adult section. We continue past this on to the children's section. It is down a little ramp, and there is another circulation desk in this area. I love that the children's section has its own library and circulation area! The staff are so friendly, and always attentive to the children-patrons.
Picture books are against the wall in the back. In this area are also lots of toys to inspire imaginative play. There is a grocery store stand, a cash register, dress-up clothes, two different doll houses, wooden puzzles, baby dolls, and building toys, like bristle blocks. There is a large, open space for children to play with these toys. The seating in this area is cozy, with a bench lining the wall. There is one computer in this area where children can play interactive learning games, like ABC Mouse.
There are benches throughout the children's section, perfect for kiddos who like to read the first couple pages of a book before making a selection. There is an adorable, wooden firehouse to play within the juvenile section. My son LOVED playing firefighters, while my daughter read her graphic novels! There are other computers throughout the juvenile section, where children can use the children's catalog to search for their newest read!
You must be a Williamsburg or James City County resident, or a William & Mary staff member or student to obtain a library card and check out materials. We typically explain to our children that we cannot check out these items, but I do take photos of any books that pique their interest, to see if we can check it out from our home library. This assuages any disappointment.
After exploring the library, head over to Aroma's World, where kiddos can get sandwiches, and baked treats, while we, the grown ups, usually opt for their specialty coffee drinks, wraps and salads!
